Describe an important connection you have made with someone outside of your family.
—-
Although art is a lifelong passion of mine, that passion could not last without the guidance of my art teacher, Sunyoung Kwon. She has taught me to push myself, experiment, and take risks in my art. Ever since I could hold a pencil, art has been something I loved to do. So, my mom enrolled me in her studio when I was in first grade and I began taking lessons with her. She helped me cultivate my art skills and was patient with my younger self. When I was less experienced, I tended to stick within the circle of mediums I knew how to use. My portfolio was filled with small colored pencil drawings and paintings done with a fine brush. However, when I was in 5th grade, my teacher brought up a new project with me; a large painting, larger than any of my previous ones. When I saw the sheer size of the canvas, I began to feel intimidated by it. How could I fill up a blank white board almost the same size as me? Though, with her help and encouragement, I turned the canvas into a full painting. Instead of the tiny brushes that you could barely see the ends of, I began to use larger ones. Instead of trying to be perfect with each stroke, I began to look back o* " whole picture. To this day, this enormous painti a significant milestone in my art career and I cc not have finished it without her support.

Though my art teacher works with me on projects I feel comfortable with, she also pushes me to experiment outside my comfort zone. Stop-motion and animation was a form of art I never really delved into before, but in her classes, I was able to create a distinctive piece different from anything I had previously done. Her expertise went beyond 2-D forms of art and into 3-D. Being in her studio and seeing the experimental works of others, I became inspired and she was there to help my vision come true. Sometimes when she had a vision of what I could create, she would share it with me, even if I needed to take some risks. A piece of advice she gave me that stuck was when I was working on a drawing I was feeling questionable about. I told her I didn't really know what to do about it, and she replied that I didn't have to know what I was going to draw, I just needed to experiment and go with the flow. All I needed was the feeling of the art.
Although she is my art teacher, the lessons I have learned have extended beyond the studio. I am now comfortable trying new things, being free instead of perfect, and persevering through challenges.
I have been working with her for almost eight y and in that time, I have not only grown as an artist but as a person.
